Subject:
Will you back community legal services this election?
I am a resident of your electorate and am concerned about the lack of community legal support for Victorians facing a range of life and legal problems. Every year, over 75,000 Victorians turn to community legal services for help with more than 170,000 legal problems. Sadly, twice that number are turned away because funding does not meet community need. Investing in community-based legal assistance is one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to build up our community and strengthen our legal system. Early legal help prevents problems from escalating and reduces pressure on courts, hospitals and other services. Investing in the community legal services that back Victorians will: > Keep Victorians safe from family violence > Keep Victorians in their homes > Ease cost-of-living pressures and financial hardship > Support children and young people in crisis > Strengthen communities and build resilience > Help communities prepare for and respond to natural disasters That’s why I’m asking you to support: (1) secure five-year funding agreements for existing community legal programs; and (2) an investment of $120 million over the next term of parliament to extend support to 120,000 Victorians who would otherwise miss out on they help they need. Please let me know if you will back community legal services at this election.
