Urgent action to save Aboriginal women’s lives
I am a resident in your electorate, and I am writing because I am deeply concerned about the safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal women and children in Victoria experiencing family violence. In Victoria, Aboriginal women are 45 times more likely to experience family violence. Family violence remains the central issue in the removal of Aboriginal children from their Mums and families. Family violence drives Aboriginal women deeper into poverty and homelessness, leading to criminalisation and poor health outcomes, including suicide and death by homicide. Without readily accessible, culturally safe, specialist services and programs that Djirra delivers, too many Aboriginal women have nowhere safe to turn. That's why I'm asking you to commit to investing in Djirra's Aboriginal Women's Centre. An investment in Djirra’s Aboriginal Women’s Centre is a self-determined solution designed to save lives and save money. Djirra’s Aboriginal Women’s Centre will enable access to specialist legal assistance and wrap-around case management, counselling, family violence prevention, early intervention, healing and connection. Djirra’s Aboriginal Women’s Centre will create opportunities for Aboriginal women to lead and build economic security and financial independence. The Yoorrook Justice Commission recommended creating Aboriginal Women’s Centres. Now is the time to make it a reality. An investment in Djirra’s Aboriginal Women’s Centre is one part of the investment needed to keep Aboriginal women Strong, Safe, Together. I'm also asking you to support: > Investment in the expansion of Djirra’s full suite of services across regional Victoria, so that no Aboriginal woman has to travel more than one hour or 100km to access life saving services and programs. > Establishment of a Child Protection Notification and Referral System in Victoria, as recommended by the Yoorrook Justice Commission. > A commitment to ending the unjust criminalisation and incarceration of Aboriginal women, including opposing punitive laws that disproportionately impact Aboriginal women and contribute to the removal of Aboriginal children from their families and communities. > Secure five-year funding and greater investment in community legal services, so more Victorians can get free legal help when they need it. I am urging you to support meaningful, long-term action for Aboriginal women and to ensure that Djirra have the resources they need to keep women safe and supported. Victoria can only thrive when all members of our community are safe and supported. Please let me know whether you will support these commitments this election, as it is a major issue that will inform how I vote.
